Al Messalla develops capacities of individuals and organizations in Iraq in the field of human rights and non-violence.

Al Mesalla was founded in 2004 in Baghdad, by the local staff members of the international organisation Un Ponte Per. The organisation is dedicated to developing the capacities of individuals and organizations in the field of human rights and non-violence.

Al Mesalla is implements diverse activities that aim to spread a culture of human rights and non-violence and has participated in training human rights defenders, encouraging individuals to reject violence and discrimination, and supporting victims of violence to be reintegrated within the society.

Al Mesalla has led numerous awareness campaigns promoting human rights and non-violence through TV documentaries, poster and leaflet distribution and the organizing of workshops and events. In the north of the country they have supported the opening of local libraries which host computers and books on non-violence, while in the south they help to monitor human rights issues in Iraqi jails.

In 2007, Al Mesalla launched the LAONF network which gathers 46 Iraqi organizations annually in a non-violence week across Iraq, whilst in 2013, Al Mesalla hopes to create the first Iraqi Social Forum. In expectation of this event several local campaigns will be organized across a diverse range of themes, including:

  • Transparency and oil.
  • Co-existence and rejecting violence.
  • Freedom of expression.

Organization Objectives:

  • Spreading human rights culture, supporting principles of human rights in general and women rights in particular.
  • Rejecting all sorts of violence and discrimination on the bases of gender, races, religion and sectarian differences ……etc.
  • Spreading the culture of non-violence and attempting to believe in non-violence as the only way for the political, economical, social, and educational changes.
  • Building the capacity of young class and civil community organizations and strengthening their role in the society.
  • Supporting the neglected classes of the community those have faced violence or they suffer from poverty so as to newly integrate them to the community
